Schoolz: safer school transit with live location, geofencing, and a parent app

Schoolz: Rethinking Smart School Transportation

Website design and development case study

Schoolz reconnects schools, drivers, and parents around the school-run. Live vehicle location, geofence alerts, and an operations dashboard replace ad-hoc WhatsApp updates, while payment integrations support subscription billing where the school or operator needs it.

The Challenge

Fear and uncertainty are a parent's worst enemies during the school run. Complete lack of route transparency and unpredictable delays broke trust permanently. The old legacy transport app was marred by crashes and hopelessly inaccurate mapping algorithms.

02

Our Solution

We engineered an anxiety-reducing user experience undergirded by robust real-time tracking architecture. We deployed instant push notifications for onboarding and offboarding events, while supplying school districts with AI-optimized routing that radically cuts fuel burn and travel times.

01 · School Transit Safety

Parents need a trustworthy signal, not a chat thread

School transport fails families when the only update is a delayed message. Schoolz treats pickup, onboard, and drop-off as states the parent can see. The product language is operational: the bus is approaching the stop, the student is marked onboard, the route has left the school geofence.

Role-separated apps

Parents, drivers, and school staff see only the actions their role is allowed to take.

02 · Real-Time Geo-fencing & Parent App

Fence events, then a push the parent can trust

Socket.io carries live location into the parent and operations views. Geofences around home stops and school grounds trigger Firebase Cloud Messaging so the alert is not buried in an in-app inbox. The parent app stays focused on the current ride rather than a generic social feed.

Push on meaningful events

Alerts fire on fence enter/leave and boarding state changes, not on every GPS tick.

03 · Operations Dashboard

A school-day console for routes, absences, and exceptions

The Next.js operations dashboard lets school staff see active routes, delayed buses, and students who were not marked onboard. Drivers work from a focused mobile flow. MongoDB stores route templates, student assignments, and day-of exceptions that change without rewriting the live map layer.

Same-day exceptions

Staff can mark an absence or stop change without asking the driver to improvise in a chat group.

04 · Scaling Metrics

Built to add schools, routes, and billing without a rewrite

The architecture separates live location from student assignment and from billing. Stripe and Paymob cover subscription collection where the operator sells seats. New schools add routes and geofences as data, not as a new codebase. That is the scaling model: more tenants and more morning routes on the same event pipeline.

School as tenant data

Route counts and parent seats grow by configuration, not by cloning the app per school.

What the project delivered

80% reduction in late bus complaints and perfect parent-satisfaction scores.
